Since National Treasure and the Da Vinci Code have made the Knights Templar somewhat of a household word, there have been many books placed on the market to cash in on their popularity this book is not one of them.

The Knights Templar in the Golden Age of Spain was originally published in 2001 under the Spanish title of El Legado Templario or The Templar Legacy.

The book’s author-Juan Garcia Atienza, while virtually unknown in English speaking circles, is considered to be one of the leading experts on the Knights Templar in Spain and has written more than 30 books on the Middle Ages and related subjects.

Golden Age is a welcomed addition to the Templar genre as it deals with an aspect of Templar history that has had little coverage at least in the English language-the Templars’ activity in the Iberian Peninsula.

Over the course of 296 well-illustrated pages, Atienza delivers us an account of the Order’s participation in the Reconquista, which saw the Moors driven from Spain. Additionally the book shows the Order’s influence in the kingdoms of Castille and Navarre as well as the territories of Aragon and Catalonia. There are several maps in the book outlining where the Templars had property.

Additionally, the book deals with the Templars’ involvement with the Cathars and troubadours.

Finally the author deals with the demise of the Order in Spain and their continuation in Portugal under the name The Knights of Christ.

The book contains notes and references as well as an index.

The Knights Templar in the Golden Age of Spain is highly recommended to those who wish to understand more about the Knights Templar and their activities outside France and the Holy Land.
